"More Before" — Mini-Workshops & Demos

A unique aspect of quilting is the enormous variety of activities which "quilting" encompasses. There are quilters who collect quilts and quilted items; textile historians who focus on quilts and their care; designers who make patterns, design fabric, write books and think up new notions; teachers; and creators of wall hangings, bed quilts, clothing, accessories and framed art quilts using piecing, applique, painting, embellishments, thread and more.

More Before has been a part of other large guilds where it is necessary to meet the needs of so many diverse quilters. Its purpose is to highlight as many techniques as possible. Setting up small demos and talks before the regular meetings gives us a chance to sample techniques without any additional expense. Seeing what others are doing and how they are doing it can give a small taste of what is possible.

Join us from 6pm to 7pm for More Before and if you would like to share a technique please let us know!

September: Redwork

Redwork is a form of embroidery which uses red floss to trace simple line drawings. It became popular in the Victorian era as women looked for new ways to decorate their homes. The idea came from Europe where it was called "Turkey work" because turkey red was one of the few colorfast colors of that time. Today, many different colors are used both for the backgrounds and the floss or thread. Drawings, coloring books, stained glass and applique patterns are all good sources for redwork.

There will be two 20 minute presentations: one by Joan LeVasseur (you may remember her beautiful shower curtain in the quilt show), and the other by Joann DiGiovanni (who is working on a quilt for The Gathering.)

We are looking for suggestions from our members and hopefully some will step forward to share their skills. You do not need to be an expert. This is more of a show and tell than a presentation put on by an "expert". We are simply sharing our quilting adventure.
